Join members of the ELGA Steering Committee for a special evening event launching ELGA in Australia. The ELGA launch will be taking place at the opening night of the AELA Earth Arts Exhibition, Spring Hill Reservoirs Gallery in Brisbane. Join us for drinks, canapés and presentations by Klaus Bosselmann, Cormac Cullinan, Geoff Garver, Katy Gwiazdon and Michelle Maloney.
Co-hosted by the Australian Earth Laws Alliance and ELGA, this 2-day symposium considers recent developments in ‘rights of nature’ and ‘legal personhood’ laws, and examines whether they are capable of transforming industrial societies and their legal relationships with the living world. The call for papers is now closed.
About the Seminar: The Ethics Specialist Group of the IUCN World Commission on Environmental Law and Earth Law Center present a 90-minute seminar on legal developments in the field of rights of nature, with an emphasis on educating law students and legal professionals.
The growing rights of nature movement seeks to shift our human-centered legal system to one that represents all life on Earth. It posits that ecosystems possess inherent rights to exist, thrive and evolve, and that nature should have standing to defend its rights in court.
Ecuador and Bolivia recognize nature’s rights nationally, as do dozens of communities in the United States. In the last few years, rivers in Colombia and New Zealand have gained permanent legal rights, as has the entire Colombian Amazon. The seminar will delve into the implications of these and other developments and provide attendees with practical knowledge on the rights of nature.
